No Beer && Code meeting next week

Since we are doing a #BigOmaha pre-party, we will not be having our regularly scheduled meeting next week.  So make sure you come out Wednesday, whether you are coming to #BigOmaha or not.  Meet some new programmer faces from around the country coming to this event.

See you this Wednesday.  Not next Wednesday (May 16, 2012).

#BigOmaha Pre-Party open to all/only programmers!

Coming to #BigOmaha this year?  In the area, but not going to #BigOmaha?  Either way, Great!  If you follow this blog (or Twitter feed) you will be happy to know there is a party just for you.

I am throwing a little get-together (pre-party?!) for all Coders in the area.  Its at the Old Mattress Factory down town on Wednesday, starting at 5PM.  We have the downstairs party room reserved for us!  … just tell them you are here for the Beer && Code party.  Programmers only, trolls stay away.

For those that don’t know, this is walking distance from the Official Opening Party at the Slowdown (see schedule).  Here is The Slowdown and Old Mattress Factory on Google Maps.  The Old Mattress Factory has a wide array of craft beers.  Since that is half way what Beer && Code is all about, I wanted to make sure we had a good place for that.  They have parking at the Old Mattress Factory if you need, i think its a few dollars though.

This is open to all programmers in the area!  The idea was to connect some of the folks traveling from out of town and the local Omaha people together.  So many programmers come to Omaha for this conference, and it just seems to obvious to get you all connected before the festivities.  My hope is that there are some good connections made for everyone at this pre-party.  If not, at least we have a good place to drink and talk about the next few days…

Where:  Old Mattress Factory - 501 North 13th Street Omaha, NE 68102 (Map!)

Time:  Starts at 5PM, goes until roughly 8pm… so we can all head over to the Slowdown.

Who:  Programmers only!

Beer && Code @ Lucky Bucket Brewery’s Tasting Room

I’m very excited to announce that the Omaha Beer && Code group is going to meet at the Lucky Bucket Brewery this month.  They have a tasting room with wifi, tables, and the typical needed room to write/talk code and have a good drink.  I’m told there will be six taps of all the Lucky Bucket brews you can taste.  I know they just released a spring brew, so do try that.

Come early!  The place officially opens at 4pm.  They will be doing tours of the brewery for $3.  I’m planning to make it for a tour.

They close at 7pm, a little earlier than we normally go until.  Don’t show up late.

Date: Wednesday April 18, 2012

Place:  Lucky Bucket Brewry (the tasting room).

Address:  11941 Centennial Road, Suite 1  La Vista, NA 68128 (Google Map)

Time: 5PM - 7PM  (They open at 4pm and will do tours!)

New tumblr theme.

This is hardly news by any means, but I thought since the old site was hideous beyond belief I would spend 20 minutes and update the theme.  This is better.  Still not as good as our own site.  Which will happen; someday.

Beer && Code - March 2012 - CAMP CoWorking

Hey everyone it is that time of the month again.  Time to get out and find a bunch of programmers doing their thing with a frosty brew.  The Beer && Code has been traveling all around Omaha at different pubs, so I thought it was time to try something a little different.

This month we are going to venture to CAMP Omaha.  For those that don’t know, CAMP is a CoWorking hotspot downtown at the Mastercraft Building.  I’ve personally been a drop in there a few times and I love the environment.  If you work for yourself, run a business, or something in between CAMP might be for you.

They don’t serve beer though.  So I’ll be brining a case of beers for anyone.  I encourage you to bring a six pack, case, etc of something.  Do you brew your own?  Bring that to show it off to some others.  They have plenty of desks for us to work at, wifi (of course).

Since we’ll be invading CAMP, I’d like to ask that some of us chip and drop a little donation to them.  Megan and Dave are great peeps and will likely be cleaning up our mess.  A small tip is the least we do.  It doesn’t have to be much either.  I plan to drop them a sweet bill with Abraham Lincoln’s face on it.  If we all do that, we can do more awesome parties there…

Date:  Wednesday March 21, 2012.

Time:  about 5pm until 8 or 9pm.

Where:  CAMP CoWorking - http://campcoworking.com/contact  (Master craft building)

Parking:  Pull into the master craft building and there a lot of parking there.  The door to the building is on the south side (where you enter).

Wednesday - Feb 15 - The Lauter Tun

This month’s Beer && Code is the day after Valentines day.  Be sure to take our your real significant other the day after Valentines day for Beer && Code.

Next week I am making good on our promise to a location out west.  We will meet a brand new bar called The Lauter Tun (website).  I was there earlier this week and its a fantastic bar with great brews on tap, many bottles, solid wifi. If you live out west and haven’t been here, make sure you meet us there on Wednesday.  They don’t have a big table, so we’ll either all be at the bar or spread out.

I’m told also, that live music will start between 7pm and 8pm.  I am guessing work will die off by then…

Day:  Wednesday Feburary 15, 2012

Time:  5pm until 8pm.

Where:  Lauter Tun - By Jimmy Johns, Verizon in the Oakview Area.  (map)

Address:  3309 Oak View Drive #102, Omaha NE 68144

Up Stream - Downtown - Wednesday - 1/18/2012

The first Beer && Code of 2012.  We are doing it at the downtown location of Up Stream.  I picked a downtown location for the folks that wanted to goto the Silicon Prairie Meetup.  I will be going early on for a drink and then heading over to Beer && Code.  I have the table reserved starting at 5pm.  I probably won’t be there until closer to 5:45pm is my guess.  Just a heads up…

We are supposed have a table upstairs by some outlets.  When you get there, tell them you are here for the Beer && Code party.  They will likely look at you weird (as usual) but that is the name its under.  ;)  I’ve been assured that their wifi is solid by a few people there.

Where:  Up Stream Downtown (website).  - upstairs.

When:  Wednesday 1/18/2011

Time: 5PM - 8PM.  (same time as SPN’s meet up).

… Hope to see you there!

2011 - End of Year Party - Friends

Besides being about beer and code; this so called group is about community.  Instead of reaching out to big companies for sponsorship for our party tonight, I wanted to reach out to people that make this event more like community.  Here is a little word about those people…

Lyconic

Lyconic is a (web) software company with an office out in west Omaha.  Adam, Aron and Carl are at Beer && Code monthly events quite often.  These guys are always showing off some neat code.  Typically they do things a lot in Ruby on Rails and Postgresql these days. I know that they are currently hiring for a UX/UI guy.  Interested?  Drop them a line - jobs@lyconic.com.

Good-Twin

Good Twin is an Omaha based branding, design, and development collateral.    You likely have run into Andrew Wirick a bunch of monthly events.  He’s a well known JQuery guru and has helped people often at events; with code or beer tips.  He recently joined up with Adam Nielsen at Good Twin; a natural team up.

Slouch Couch

Slouch Couch is a fun group of programmers dudes who show up to a lot Beer && Code events.  These guys came out the recent Startup Weekend Omaha event in August.  They are going to setup a laptop to play their recent SPN game.  Play it.  Ask them about how they made it, what they used, etc.  Its buzzword compliant:  HTML5, Javascript, CSS, etc, etc, etc. based game.  Playing the game will net you the chance to win a free tshirt too!

Gabe Kangas

(Twitter) A beer && coder who comes to most of the monthly events.  He just wanted to throw in for the tab and say thanks to everyone.  Find him and ask him what he’s working on.  He’s been working with Slouch Couch and some iOS based development these days.

Ninth Division

Ninth Division is my company here in Omaha.  For the last three years we’ve built many different types of mobile apps for a number of clients; more known for the iPhone and iPad apps.  I’m looking forward to a big year next year with a few apps of our own planned.  Find me (Andy Peters) at the event and ask me about iOS and Android Development.  I’d love to find more people out there who are interested, currently coding for it, etc.

2011 - End of Year Party Details

Thats right, this week is the awesome beyond awesome “End of Year party” at Krug Park.  It’s this Wednesday December 21 starting at (around) 5:00PM.  I thought you all should know some things before hand…

RSVP

It’d help us if you RSVP’d - http://twtvite.com/beercodeparty … if you don’t thats okay too.

Free beer.

That’s right, some of your friends are buying a round or two.  We will have tickets to hand out to you all when you get there to account for the purchase of a fine beer.  When you get there, someone will be handing these out.  These friends (and avid Beer && Coders) include Lyconic, Good Twin, Gabe Kangas himself and my home base Ninth Division.

Food

There will be some basic appetizers and things to munch on.  We aren’t going to have a full course meal for you.  So probably eat before hand.

Significant Others

Your spouse is welcome, if you don’t think they’d be too bored.  Hey this is a party after all…

Krug Park

As you know this is at Krug Park.  If you haven’t been to Krug Park before, its fantastic.  They have so many great craft beers from all over there.  If you have been there, I know you’ll return… just because of the spot.  Lets pack the place!  Invite other programmers who haven’t been here before.  If this is your first time, come on out.

Not a private event

They are not closing the pub just for us beer driven programmers.  Just a heads up, normal people will be there too.  This is one of the reasons we’ll also be doing a name tag thing.

Leave your laptops at home.

This is a social event.  Leave the laptops at home or the office or whatever.  Plan on meeting a few new programmers and learning about what everyone is working on, good at, what their twitter handle is, github account is, etc.  Make some new connections and do a little bragging… its the end of the year.

Community

Beer && Code is about Community.

I’m not an event planner.  Sorry if its a little rocky or “off”.

Enjoy yourself!

2011 - End of the Year Party for Coders.

Mark your calendar for Wednesday December 21, 2011!  We are having another end of the year celebration.  Thats right, you made it this far… time to have a fine beer and chat with fellow programmers!

Last year I sort of threw together off the cuff a end of the year celebration at Upsteam.  A lot of people showed up and it was a good time.  Who knew!?  This year, we’re “knocking it up a notch” (Futurama joke).  The party is at Krug Park.  … Krug Park, was such a great place we wanted to have a bigger party there.

Show up thirsty for beer and good conversations.  Leave the laptops at home this time, as its mostly a social thing (unless you want to bring the laptops to work or show off some great work; this is Beer && Code after all).

Spread the word to other programmers.  It’d be great to have a great turn out!

I’m still putting together the final details, so watch the website for more details.

Beer && Code - November 16 - Library Pub

November is here and I’m ready for another get together again!  This month I had planned to take us to the Side Door Lounge.  I found out late that they don’t and (as I was told) will probably never have WIFI.  So I scratched that idea and went back to the drawing board.

Then I found a nifty sounding little bar called the Library Pub.  They claim to have more than 160 Craft Beers available, solid wifi and plenty of places to sit.  I have never been there personally, but I talked with the owner and he’s excited to have us.  They don’t have food, but lots to choose from for drinks, many spaces to sit, good wifi, and plenty of spots for power.   He said they play movies that night starting at around 10pm.  So if any of us have too many, there are movies to stick around and watch.

PS - I’ll be announcing a end of the year party here shortly.  Plans are coming together.

See you Wednesday!

When:  Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Time:  I’ll be there at 5PM, most people show up around 6PM.

Where:  Library Pub (google map location) (their website)
